Stalingrad Battle (17 July 1942 – 2 February 1943) was a number of Soviet operation to defend Stalingrad of Volgograd Region and defeat the strategic German group in Don and Volga interfluve during World War Two. The battle for the city continued for 200 days of which 135 days the battle was fought at Mamai Mound. Its top gives an excellent view and opportunity to hold a wide area under fire including the crossing of Volga. It was the last stand of the 62nd Soviet Army. Simultaneously, the heavies battles were fought all over the city under massive bombings. Within just a week since 23 until 30 August, the city had lost circa 40 thousand civilians of which 150 thousand had been wounded. The total enemy forces here were half of all tank and mechanized forces of the Soviet German front and 35 percent of infantry. Red Army soldiers were resisting heroically. Every inch of land was fiercely defended. On Thursday, November 19, 1942, Soviet troops started their counteroffensive. The great battle was over on 2 February 1943 after entanglement, defeat and capture of the select enemy group. The completion of Stalingrad Battle was proclaimed the Day of Russian Military glory.
